In Livingston County just north of Ann Arbor is a Chain of Lakes fed primarily by the Huron River. This lake chain includes: Zukey Lake, Strawberry Lake ,Gallagher Lake, Whitewood Lake, Tamarack Lake, Base Lake and Portage Lake. There are large elbow areas that aren’t lakes but wide parts of the river that connect them to each other. Some are more accessible that others.

ZUKEY LAKE

This lake is on the south side of M-36 east of Pinckney and west of US 23. It is in the Pinckney Community School System. The depths of the lake are from 5 to 35 feet with 156 acres surrounded with sand and marsh areas. The eastern shore has subdivisions while the west has scattered cottages. Zukey empties into Devil’s Basin which then enters Strawberry Lake.

STRAWBERRY LAKE

At 257 Acres, Strawberry Lake is one of the largest lakes in the chain. The Huron River flows into it from the east and flows out on the southwest side of the lake. This lake looks like butterfly wings to my mind with a narrows between them. This lake has an island on the east side and an appendage called Turtle Bay to the northwest. The depth ranges from5 to 50 feet. This shoreline is sandy with woody and marsh areas. This lake has habitats to encourage fish populations.

GALLAGHER LAKE

This 76 acre lake is fed by the Huron River as it moves southwest from Strawberry Lake. In the 1930’s, it was considered Gallagher Lakes. There are extensive lowlands to the northwest bordered by the river on the south and a road to the north. As with the other lakes in the chain, the shore line is wooded and marshy with cottages and homes scattered along the shore.

WHITEWOOD LAKE

This amoeba-shaped body of water fed by the Huron River consists of two bodies of water with a narrow connection. The depth ranges from3 feet to 50 feet. Unlike some of the lakes in the chain, the surrounding countryside is brushy and in Pasteur land. The river flows in at the northeast corner and flows out to the southwest. There are some cottages and homes along its shore.
